Bargaining Update #2
Heads up! As we start preparing for bargaining, we want to hear from you about what’s important for the Team to address in negotiations. Based on the last round of bargaining, as well as information collected at membership meetings, we will be asking for your feedback on topics that affect faculty and academic staff.

Bargaining Update #1
Time flies! Two years ago this week, we signed the current contract (the ‘Collective Bargaining Agreement’) between Wayne State University and AAUP-AFT Local 6075, now known as the Wayne Academic Union (WAU). Our contract will expire on June 30, 2024. We anticipate starting negotiations for a new contract in March of 2024.

Reuther Archivists Support the UAW
WAU member archivists at the Reuther Library pulled out signs from past UAW strikes to support the historic auto worker strike at the big three.

Labor Day Parade

WAU members will march with our union in the Detroit Labor Day parade this year. Meet on Monday morning at 8:30 am at the corner of Trumbull and Porter. The parade kicks off at 9 am. Wear your new Wayne Academic Union t-shirt if you have one. If you need one, email the office with your size so we can bring one for you.

Join us for a day of connecting, food, and sunshine! The teaching faculty committee with our union is hosting a back-to-school BBQ for all Wayne Academic Union members on August 25 from 3 pm - 6 pm at shelter # 17 on Belle Isle. The TFC will provide hamburgers, veggie burgers, hot dogs, and light snacks. This event is great for meeting others from across campus and connecting with your peers!

Pramod Khosla named chief negotiator
Pramod Khosla, Professor of Nutrition and Food Science, and Grievance Coordinator for Faculty, will serve as Chief Negotiator for the 2024 round of contract negotiations.

WAU members attend AAUP Summer Institute in Vermont
Four academic staff members from Wayne State travelled to the University of Vermont for the annual AAUP Summer Institute. They learned about collective bargaining, organizing, and building campaigns and met up with higher ed workers from Michigan and the country.
Childcare Subsidy Application Open Until July 31
You can now apply for the AAUP-AFT 6075 Childcare Subsidy program, supplementing costs for childcare (for children pre-first grade) accrued between January and June 2023. The application period will close Monday July 31, 2023 at 11:59pm.
Statement on Anti-Trans Comments at Board of Governors Meeting
At the June meeting of the Wayne State University Board of Governors Student Affairs Committee, there was a presentation of a new Center for Gender and Sexuality. A board member responded with offensive, demeaning, and transphobic language attacking the entire LGBTQIA+ community. We were deeply disappointed that neither President Wilson nor committee chair Kelly spoke against those comments.

Download a nomination form for this year's regular elections —positions for President, Secretary and two Members-at-Large are open (position descriptions are included on the form). Nominations close on the floor of the Thursday meeting, but can be returned to office@aaupaft.org. If you or someone you know is planning to run, get the form in ASAP.
